After spending nine months in a cozy, warm and dark nest, you would really not expect your tiny gorgeous creature to be ready to sleep on her own, in an open cot, maybe with lights and sounds around. Would you? The truth is, the only place they are comfortable on is on your chest; possibly in the dark. No one else around; no, not even TV. Oh, and sucking, of course. That's it. Everything else is a huge challenge for them. Do you still think sleep should come naturally? Think again.
So here is a few facts about baby sleep:
- Circadian rhythm, aka their body clock, is not formed until they are at least eight weeks old. That's why they are often wide awake in the middle of the night. There is no day or night for them, until you show them the difference.
- Their sleep cycles are shorter than adults and have only two stages. It is less complex, in a way, but also lighter and easily disrupted.
- Baby sleep changes constantly during development. You may have heard of sleep regressions. More stages are introduced; cycles become articulated; sleep is influenced by what happens during the day; emotions kick in. All of these things together make sleeping through the night harder than you think.
In any case, there are many things you can do to improve the quality of your nights and help your child become a sleeping star. If you'd like to learn more, get in touch!
